Rochdale’s NatWest Branch Set to Close as Customers Use More Digital or Alternative Services

NatWest has announced plans to close a considerable number of bank branches across the country, with Rochdale's branch among those slated for closure. This decision reflects a nationwide trend of reduced in-person banking as customers increasingly adopt digital and other alternative methods for managing their finances.

The announcement comes as NatWest reports a dramatic 62% drop in average counter transactions between October 2019 and October 2024. This significant decrease highlights the growing popularity of online and mobile banking services among their customer base. Many customers have also been utilising the Post Office network for making deposits, indicating a shift away from traditional branch banking.

While the closure of the Rochdale branch may be concerning for some members of the community, it’s important to be aware of the alternative options available for your banking needs. NatWest emphasises that essential services remain accessible through several channels:

  • Online and Mobile Banking: The bank's online and mobile applications offer a comprehensive range of services, allowing you to manage your accounts, make payments, and check balances from the convenience of your phone or computer.
  • Post Office Banking: Customers can continue to make cash deposits and withdrawals using their debit card at any Post Office branch. This provides a convenient alternative for those who prefer not to use digital banking.
  • Cheque Deposits: While in-branch cheque deposits will no longer be an option, customers can still deposit cheques via the NatWest mobile banking app.
  • Paying-In Books for Cheques: For those who prefer to deposit cash or cheques in person at the Post Office, NatWest advises that customers ensure they have a paying-in book. If you do not currently have one, the bank recommends ordering one to facilitate deposits at the Post Office.
  • Bank Card for Deposits: Your card can serve as a substitute for a traditional paying-in slip. This means that instead of filling out a paper form to deposit cash into your account, you can simply present your card, in a NatWest branch or at a Post Office branch.

The closure of the Rochdale branch is part of a wider strategic shift by NatWest to adapt to the changing needs and preferences of its customer base. While the bank acknowledges that this change may require some adjustments, they are keen to highlight that banking services will remain accessible through multiple pathways.

For customers who regularly use the Rochdale branch, this news may be unsettling. However, by familiarising yourself with the alternative methods available, such as online banking, using the Post Office, and the mobile cheque deposit feature, you can ensure a smooth transition and continue to manage your finances effectively.

The scheduled closure of the Rochdale branch necessitates a review of available services for impacted customers. Fortunately, there are alternative branch locations readily accessible in neighboring areas. Specifically, branches in Bury, Oldham, and Cheetham Hill will remain open, providing a point of service for customers who formerly used the Rochdale branch.

NatWest encourages customers who have any questions or concerns about the branch closure and the alternative services to visit their website or contact their customer service team for further information and assistance.
