Swift Action Leads to Arrest of Suspected Thief in Rochdale

A combination of rapid response from local police and the sharp eyes of a passing motorist resulted in the arrest of a suspected thief in Rochdale on Monday afternoon, December 30th. The incident highlights the effectiveness of community collaboration in combating crime.

Rochdale North neighbourhood officers were conducting routine retail crime patrols along Whitworth Road when they witnessed a security guard from Dunelm in pursuit of a man. Without hesitation, the officers joined the chase, which led them onto Haynes Street. The suspect momentarily evaded their sight.

Crucially, a vigilant member of the public, with the occupation of security guard at the nearby Dunelm store, witnessed the commotion and, recognising the urgency, turned their car around to point out the suspect’s escape route. The witness informed the officers that the man had scaled a wall into the grounds of Richmond Hall and was likely around the vicinity.

Acting on this invaluable tip, the officers quickly located the suspect in the Richmond Hall car park. Upon his arrest, a search revealed that he was in possession of suspected stolen goods worth over £200.

However, the story didn’t end there. Subsequent checks revealed that the individual was also wanted in connection with a separate, more significant theft at a B&Q store in Ashton. In the Ashton incident, goods valued at approximately £1,300 had allegedly been stolen.

The man, whose identity has not been released, was subsequently charged with both theft offenses. He was brought before Manchester Magistrates’ Court the following day, on Tuesday, December 31st.

This incident serves as a testament to the effectiveness of proactive police work combined with the vigilance of local residents. The quick thinking of the passing motorist, in particular, played a crucial role in the suspect's apprehension and underscores the importance of community involvement in crime prevention. This case also highlights the dedication of Rochdale’s neighbourhood police in tackling retail crime and working to ensure the safety and security of the local community.
