Bee Network Transport and Mobility Expansion Continues: New Phase of Manchester Road Improvements Set to Begin

Rochdale, Greater Manchester - Residents of Rochdale can expect further improvements to Manchester Road as Phase 2 of the Greater Manchester Bee Network project gets underway in March 2025. The upgrades aim to create a safer and more accessible environment for all road users, pedestrians, and cyclists.

The Bee Network is a comprehensive initiative designed to transform transport across Greater Manchester by providing better public transport options, improving cycling and pedestrian facilities, and upgrading road infrastructure.

Phase 1 of the Manchester Road project, which concluded in January 2025, saw significant improvements between Castleton Railway Station and The Royal Toby Hotel. This included new footpaths, segregated cycle lanes, crossing points, car parks, and a new community play park opposite Nixon Street.

Phase 2, commencing on March 10th, 2025, will focus on the stretch of Manchester Road from its junction with Dane Street and The Esplanade to The Royal Toby Hotel. Scheduled for completion in 2027, the project will include:

  • Enhanced Landscaping: New greenery and planting, with opportunities for community participation.
  • Improved Footpaths and Cycle Lanes: Creating dedicated spaces for safe and comfortable travel.
  • New Crossings at Major Junctions: Enhancing pedestrian safety at key intersections.
  • Road Re-surfacing: Ensuring a smoother driving experience.
  • Traffic Calming Measures: Implementing strategies on quieter streets to improve safety for all users.
  • Controversial Replacement of New Barn Lane Subway: Replacing the existing underpass with a new road crossing, as more classic subways disappear.

Road Closures and Delays Expected

While the improvements are welcomed, the project will inevitably lead to some disruption. Work will take place between 7:30 am and 5 pm, Monday to Friday. One side of Manchester Road will remain open, with temporary traffic lights managing traffic flow. Overnight road closures will be implemented when necessary, with advance notice provided. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the works.

The council has outlined a phased schedule to minimise disruption:

  • March 2025 - August 2025: The Royal Toby Hotel to Silk Street, including the junction with Tweedale Street.
  • August 2025 - March 2026: Silk Street/Bolton Road junction to Roch Valley Way/Edinburgh Way junction, and improvements to the crossing located where Drake Street meets Manchester Road.
  • March 2026 - August 2026: New Barn Lane junction to Tweedale Street junction, including the area in front of Highfield Hospital.
  • August 2026 - January 2027: Drake Street junction to The Esplanade junction.

In addition, works will be carried out on nearby 'quiet street' routes without affecting main road traffic. Access to properties will be maintained throughout the project.

The council has expressed its gratitude for the public's patience and assures residents that all efforts will be made to minimise delays during the construction period. The improvements are expected to significantly boost public health, upgrade public spaces, and reduce traffic and flood risks, contributing to a more vibrant and accessible Rochdale.
