Whitworth to Commemorate 80th Anniversary of VE Day with Flag Raising, Beacon Lighting, and Community Celebration
Whitworth, Rossendale - Whitworth Town Council has announced a series of events to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) on Thursday, May 8th, 2025. The town will mark the historic occasion with solemn remembrance and vibrant community celebration.
The day's commemorations will begin at 9:00 am with patriotic flag raising at Market Street, Whitworth, Rossendale, Lancashire OL12 8DP. Following the flag raising ceremony, at 9:30 pm the National Tribute will be read, coinciding with the lighting of a beacon overlooking the town.
The anniversary also coincides with Whitworth’s Annual Meeting of the Parish, being held at 7:30 pm at The Ashcroft, Market St, Whitworth. Attendees will be offered a taste of history with the official Women’s Institute VE Day Orange and Ginger cake.
But the celebrations don't stop there. A larger, community-focused event is planned for Sunday, May 11th, 2025, from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm at The Ashcroft on Market Street. Organised by the Whitworth Tourism and Leisure Committee, this event promises to be a vibrant tribute to the spirit of VE Day.

Organisers are encouraging residents to embrace the atmosphere of the 1940s by donning their best vintage attire. Photographer Howard Wilkinson will be on hand to capture the memories of this special day.
